Door Safety Latch

A safety door latch is a special fastening that is used on a variety of doors. It is made using a bar that is situated inside of a notch and that has been lifted from both sides using a lever or string. The bar is pivoted and will cross the joint on the door to the strike on the jamb through the free end of the bar. It will raise it and disengage it from the strike on the jamb through the transverse pivoted bar. There are three main types of latches; dead latch, patio door latches, and rim latches.

Dead Latches

The dead latch is a common type of door knob lock. This will provide a certain amount of security but only for interior doors. When you use these on your front and back doors it is best to install and use a deadbolt as well. The dead latch is designed with a beveled end and a plunger. When it is pressed down it will lock automatically. These are often made using aluminum, steel, iron, and bronze.

Patio Door Latches

There are quite a few different types of patio door latches. The type that you get will depend on the kind of doors that you have; sliding or not sliding. These types of safety door latches have the ability to keep the sliding door in its tracks. Others are not keyed and are designed to lock an unlock through a special trigger. Even with these latches in place it is best to use some other form of security on the sliding glass door.

Rim Latches

A rim latch is one of the more old fashioned latches that were used on the 19th century homes. For many years no one would continue to use them – but now people are slowly bringing them back into style. These are best to use in homes that have a more rustic and retro feel to them.

Each of these latches are built into a door rather then on the door edge. Over the years they have been designed to be much safer then they used to be. One of the best features that they have is a sliding privacy lock. These are made using a variety of metals that you can find in various finishes to match the look of your home. They can be found in various sizes and may be used in ceramic, glass, and other types of door knobs.
