Door Safety Chain

The standard locks that come on any door are not usually enough to keep criminals out of our home. One simple way that you are able to protect your home without spending a great deal of money is to use a door safety chain. These are simple locks that have been used for many years and are considered to be very effective. They are even used to help you screen the person at your door to know who they are.

Traditional Door Safety Chain

The traditional door safety chain is made using malleable iron that helps to make it durable and able to handle whatever force or pressure that comes to it. You can usually find it in a variety of finishes to match your door.

When choosing this product you have to be very careful that you do not choose something that is made with cheaper materials that will break easily at the slightest touch. Even the most durable will only cost you around $10.

Heavy Duty Door Safety Chain

The heavy duty door safety chains are not as commonly used. In most homes they are installed on the roof doors to help prevent it from blowing open during high winds. It is usually 36” long with a 3” x 3” galvanized plate that will fasten to the door using bolts. The galvanized extension spring is around 8” long and there is a rubber covering over the steel chain. This will cost around $30.

How To Install A Door Safety Chain

  • Use masking tape to create the template for the lock plate. Try to place it three to six inches above the deadbolt or the door handle.
  • Use pencil to mark each point of the template. Use the instructions that came with the product to make sure you have made them correctly. When the marks are made you will be able to remove the masking tape template.
  • Using the electric drill you will make all of the holes that your screws will use. Be sure to use the precise drill bit so they are not too large or small. Once done you will be able to screw the lock plate to the door.
  • Now you need to tape a template for the chain mount. Position this onto the wall right outside the door frame. You must make sure that this lines up exactly with the plate lock.
  • Mark it like you did with the other template and drill the necessary holes before screwing in the chain mount.
  • Once it is completed you will be able to test the lock out. Make sure that it is secure to the door and that you can easily lock and unlock it. The door should only be able to open an inch when locked.
